This product is one of the “House” variety. This means that it is made with the cheapest ingredients using fillers for anyone who wants to say they are selling “wasabi”. Just a smaller pack than the previous review. Notice the water is the biggest ingredient used in this concoction.

Reviewers Recommendation

Another brand to be left alone if you are looking for a true wasabi paste. This is really the cheap and nasty stuff – nearly every food manufacturer makes a “House” variety that any retailer can claim as their own. I suspect that this product might actually come from China, and not Japan as it is claimed. The “House” type products seem to be a common product to find in China. The only thing that they have in common is that they burn the tongue and are gritty. Not nice at all.

The fact is that no matter what the manufacturers do, you have to add some stuff to rubbish to make a cheap and nasty product that the public can be conned with. Start looking at the ingredients and vote with your wallet. That way the manufacturers might start getting the message about misleading us.

Yet another horseradish crunchy pea offering to the public. This time the ingredients include palm oil. Palm Oil is getting a lot of bad press lately as it is reputed to be bad for the planet and destruction of the rainforests, as it is planted in very large plantations.

Not a lot going for it except that you can reseal the can (if you can resist eating the whole can in one sitting :) ). At least there is no MSG in this product which makes it better that the previous reviewed product. There is still the problem with the artificial colours, so still not recommended.

This product is supposed to be the same as a previously reviewed product, after all they have the same product name, but the ingredients list is different. This product even has peanut and tree nuts added to make sure that they catch out the unsuspecting nut allergic people who thought that green peas were safe. :(

There is not a large warning label on the packet, which I think is criminal.

Product contains nuts without a warning label. This is a serious safety hazard and should be avoided by the people who suffer from nut allergies. In addition, the product is not what the label claims. Leave it alone is my recommendation, even though wasabi peas are great snacks. There must be other ones out there with less damaging ingredients. I am still looking. :)

By virtue of the fact that it shows MSG as an ingredient, I would leave this on the shelf for someone else to consume.

This is the first product that I have come across that comes in a plastic packet. It is not resealable, so you either have to use it all at once or find another container to put the balance into. There is no indication on the packet how to keep the powder fresh after the packet has been opened. Mind you the powder is so cheap that it is probably expected that you throw away the product you don’t use.

Another powder that contains absolutely zero true Wasabia japonica. Once again the ingredients list is different to other faux wasabi powders. This one has to have 2 different FD & C yellow colours in it – as if one wasn’t enough.

Another powder to keep clear of if you are looking for the True Wasabia japonica (Wasabi) powder.

This is another product that is misnamed. Not only does it not contain wasabi, but it also has the nasties in it that contribute to killing you sooner than you would normally die. It does have vinegar in it as well as the acidic component. Doesn’t even bother with artifical or natural flavouring, so definately one of the cheaper bramds on the market.

This is another product that is misnamed. They should really just be called hot or spicy as they do not contain enough wasabi (if any) to make any sort of claim on the name. I must admit that they are moorish and the blurb about not being able to eat just one is true. The problem is that there is more stuff added to the peas that is bad for you than there is good. The fact that it contains MSG indicates that it should be thrown into the rubbish before consuming.

This product should not be using the name wasabi in their name, as it doesn’t contain any, although it does claim to in the ingredients list. It is obviously there only to try and use the interest in wasabi to sell the product. I suppose that calling the product “Horseradish and Mustard flavour peas” just doesn’t have the same ring about it. :)

I would be surprised if this product is even on the retailers shelves in Japan. The Japanese have more respect for their health and are more concious of what is in packaged ingredients.

Sushi Sonic Real Wasabi (46%)

Sushi Sonic Real Wasabi (46%) 2.5 oz jar

Ingredients

46% Real Wasabi (Wasabi japonica), Horseradish, mustard.

Other information:

Great Eastern Sun has discovered a source of authentic powdered wasabi (Wasabia japonica), and blended it with horseradish and mustard for SUSHI SONIC® 46% Real Wasabi Powder, giving sushi lovers the chance to experience genuine wasabi flavor and health benefits while still having that eye-wateringly pungent taste and aroma they expect in their favorite condiment.

Traditionally used as a condiment with sushi, wasabi is also a lively addition to sauces and dressings.

To prepare, mix a sufficient amount of lukewarm water with a small quantity of wasabi powder to form a smooth, thick paste. Cover and let stand 10 minutes.

This product is sold in larger jars than it 100% cousin, but really tastes and looks similar. In a direct comparison you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Makes me wonder if they are the same product with different labels on.

Another “faux” wasabi product that claims to have some Wasabia japonica in it. No indication of whether it is the rhizome or the lower value and quality stem or leaf. Since it is pale I would suspect that the only wasabi in the product is the stem.

The fact that the product is made in China would be of concern to me, especially with the amount of “faux” wasabi and other products that are coming out of that country. Also if the product is grown in the ground (most likely) then artificial fertilisers and pesticides would have been used in its growing.

Product details

SUSHI SONIC® 100% Real Wasabi Powder is pure Wasabi japonica, the rare, hard to grow, hot green rhizome so prized in the East for its pungency and medicinal properties. The taste of real wasabi is like a warm explosion in your mouth that quickly fades to a lingering slightly sweet aftertaste unlike the fake wasabi substitutes made up of horseradish and mustard. Because it is so difficult to grow, even in Japan only 5% of the sushi shops serve authentic wasabi. Wasabia japonica was known in Japan as “the King of Herbs”, and has the highest level of isoflavones after soybeans. Wasabi produces much of its distinctive pungent odor and taste from complex sulphur compounds that are produced when it is crushed or grated. These compounds, found at a higher concentration in wasabi than in almost any other food, help control many destructive pathogens and give a scientific underpinning to the traditional use of wasabi as an accompaniment to eating raw fish in the Japanese diet.

Comment

The wasabi is a fine light green power that on its own is fairly mild tasting. It doesn’t make your nose burn and open-up. This product doesn’t impart much flavor or sensation at all.

Reviewers Recommendation

Not sure about this product. It makes claims that it is 100% Wasabia japonica and yet the colour and flavour does not really support this claim. The light colour and flavour reminds me of the petiole (the stem that supports the leaf). It certainly wasn’t pure rhizome as the flavour and sinus clearing ability wasn’t there.

The fact that the product is made in China would be of concern to me, especially with the amount of “faux” wasabi and other products that are coming out of that country. Also if the product is grown in the ground (most likely) then artificial fertilisers and pesticides would have been used in its growing.
